Wyoming, Rutgers Begin Bowl Season With Wins

Saturday marked the beginning of the 2009 College Football Bowl season with the New-Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque and the St. Petersburg Bowl in Tampa. The New-Mexico Bowl pitted the Fresno State Bulldogs against the Wyoming Cowboys in an expected matchup where most thought Fresno State would handle them. Each team traded scores in the first half and went to the locker room tied 14-14. With a Ryan Mathews touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, Fresno State took a 28-17 lead over the Cowboys but the Cowboys then caught fire and scored the final 18 points including in the second overtime to give Wyoming the win. The St. Petersburg Bowl matched the UCF Golden Knights against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights turned out to be the points bowl. The teams combined for 45 points in the first half with the Scarlet Knights holding the lead 28-17. The second half was all Rutgers as they scored 17 second half points en route to a 45-24 win over the now 8-5 Golden Knights. Bowl action continues today with the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl pitting Southern Miss against Middle Tennessee State.
