Unexpected Teams, Unexpected Results

by Cody Clark ~ March 20th, 2010.

On March 14th, the NCAA Selection Committee unveiled the 2010 tournament field. From the very beginning, controversy swirled. Kansas was named the overall #1, followed by Kentucky, Syracuse, and Duke. Then the committee awarded the Cuse with the number 1 by making them travel across the country. Many thought that the West Virginia Mountaineers deserved a number one over Duke (with me as one of those people), as they had a better RPI and strength of schedule. From there, it gets even more confusing. The three seeds are Baylor, New Mexico, Georgetown, and Pitt. The Hoyas had 11 losses on the year coming in, while a 5th seed in Temple only had 6 losses and some even felt Texas A&M could have been a 3 or a 4 seed. There was also a lot of unexpected teams winning games in the first round. The #14 Ohio Bobcats clobbered perennial Big East power Georgetown, #11 Old Dominion took down a generously ranked #6 team in Notre Dame, the Murray State Racers slayed #4 Vanderbilt, and Ivy league beast Cornell took down the #5 seed Temple. All in all, seven double digit seeds advanced to the second round, as well as two nine seeds. This version of March Madness has turned out to be a very upset laden one, and with some of the second round games, the double digit seeds have a chance to really make some noise this year.
