The Votes Are In, And…
by Cody Clark ~ December 12th, 2009.By the closest voting margin ever, Alabama running back Mark Ingram edged out Stanford running back Toby Gerhart by 38 votes to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy. Ingram is the first ever Heisman winner from Alabama, and now joins the elite fraternity of winners. The ‘Bama running back is also the third consecutive sophomore player to win the award; Ingram in ‘09, Sam Bradford in ‘08, and Tim Tebow in 2007. Below, I have compiled a list of my all-college football offensive and defensive teams.
Offensive Team:
Quarterback- Case Keenum, Houston- How can you pass on 5,449 yards, 43 touchdowns, and a 71% completion percentage in just 13 games?
Running Back- Toby Gerhart, Stanford- The 2009 Doak Walker Award winner posted 1,736 yards and 26 touchdowns, leading the nation in both of those categories. (Gerhart also stars on the Cardinal baseball team.)
Running Back- Mark Ingram, Alabama- Arguably the best physical runner in the nation, Ingram is the third consecutive sophomore to win the the Heisman Trophy.
Wide Receiver- Golden Tate, Notre Dame- Jimmy Clausen’s go-to guy caught 15 touchdowns and will no doubt be a coveted asset as a Wes Welker type to a team at the NFL level.
Wide Receiver- Denario Alexander, Missouri- The physical 6′ 5″, 215 pound senior wideout grabbed 107 balls for an NCAA leading 1,644 yards and 13 scores in Missouri’s spread offense.
Wide Receiver- Jordan Shipley, Texas- One of the most prolific wideouts and kick returners at the college level, Shipley thrived with McCoy getting him the ball as he had over 1,300 yards.
Tight End- Aaron Hernandez, Florida- A key cog in the Florida offense, Hernandez is one of the best pass catching and blocking tight ends in the nation.
Defensive Team:
Defensive Tackles- Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska and Terrence “Mount” Cody, Alabama- Just imagine these two on the same defensive line. That would be 670 pounds of beef in the middle!
Defensive Ends- George Selvie, South Florida and Jerry Hughes, TCU- They are two of the best contain defenders and sack masters in college football and are going to be very highly touted draft prospects in the NFL draft.
Linebackers- Rennie Curran, Georgia, Brandon Spikes, Florida and Luke Kuechly, Boston College- Three of the top linebackers in college football, and Kuechly is a freshmen.
Corners- Joe Hayden, Florida and Javier Arenas, Alabama- Two of the best cover corners in the college game solidified the nations #1 and #2 defenses, respectively.
Safeties- Taylor Mays, USC and Eric Berry, Tennessee- These top safeties are already on NFL team draft boards and are ready to play on Sundays.
