Offenses Headline Week 9 in College Football

by Cody Clark ~ November 1st, 2009.

This week in college football sponsored absolutely gaudy numbers from the teams’ respective offenses. There were shootout games and and the high flying offenses came through in routs in some of the other games. Below are some of the games and what the offense accomplished in each of them.

1. Houston 50-43 over Southern Miss: Case Keenum absolutely went off in this game against the Eagles, as he completed a whopping 81% of his passes while going 44/54 for 559 yards and 5 TDs. The Houston offense as a whole went off for 750 total yards, but the SMU offense didn’t exactly have a bad day either, as they totaled 608 yards of total offense behind Martevious Young’s 360 yards passing. With 1358 yards of total offense, this was one of the most exciting games on yesterday’s slate and was very entertaining.

2. In another battle of the offenses, the Florida State Seminoles snuck past the  NC State Wolfpack 45-42 behind Burt Reed’s 3 yard TD run with under 1:40 left. This game was another that featured large offensive numbers. For FSU, most of their game on the ground, as they rushed for 278 yards but the Wolfpack was led by Russel Wilson and his 349 yards and 5 TDs. This game totaled 1093 yards of offense, and came down to the very last seconds.

3. Miami barely eked out a win yesterday as they snuck past the homestanding Wake Forest Demon Deacons with help from a late TD catch by Travis Benjamin off the arm of Jacory Harris. Wake jumped out early on the Hurricanes, as they had a 14-0 lead at one point, the Miami inched back and finally won the game on that play. Wake QB Riley Skinner had 201 yards in the fist half, and finished with 349 and 2 TDs, while Miami QB Jacory Harris turned in a 3 TD, 330 yard performance. This game featured two more high flying offenses, as the teams combined for 911 yards with 679 coming from the QBs.

These were just a few of the exciting games yesterday, and many of the teams cemented their places as elite teams. Take Oregon for instance. Behind 391 yards on the ground, the Ducks soared past the 5th ranked USC Trojans by a count of 47-20, which is USC’s worst lost in over a decade. Other teams such as Boise State, Texas, Florida, TCU, LSU, Ga. Tech, Ohio State, and Notre Dame all scored at least 40 points in their respective wins. This was one of the more exciting weeks that college football has had thus far, and I hope that we see more as the season begins to wind down.
