This past weekend was the opening weekend for the 2009-2010 NFL season. The slate was filled with many good games, as well as some key rivalries and chances for big time stats. Some of these good games included the Chargers 24-20 win over Oakland, New England’s narrow victory last night against Buffalo, and Denver’s last second win against the Bengals. There were also some key rivalries, as the Indianapolis Colts squeaked out a win against the Jaguars 14-12, as well as Pittsburgh’s 13-10 victory over the Tenneessee Titans. Big time stats were also put up over the weekend, as Saints QB Drew Brees threw for over 300 yards and 6 TDs. The Vikings Adrian Peterson also put up big numbers as he rushed for 180 yards on 25 carries and had three touchdowns. Below are 9 things that I learned from this past opening week in the NFL.
The Rams are possibly this year’s Detroit Lions: The Rams suffered a 28 point loss to, lets face it, a subpar Seahawk team. Look for the Seaawks to win more games than last year, but also look for the Rams to be completely and utterly awful.
Drew Brees is the top quarterback in the league: Even thugh he played the lions, Drew Brees can still put up the numbers against good teams and will continue to be one of the only bright spots for the Saints this year.
Matt Cassel was a waste of $60 million for the Chiefs: Why in the world would they spend that money on a one guy when they should have stuck with one of their younger quarterbacks and used that money to put some more weapons around him! It will show this season as the Chiefs will be undermanned in most every game.
Cadillac is Back!: Cadillac Williams rushed for 97 yards and a TD against one of the better defenses in football in the Cowboys. It seems that he might finally be healthy and is ready to put up some numbers this year.
Mark Sanchez might have a decent rookie campaign: With his 272 yard, 1 TD performance on Sunday, Sanchez looked good and with the decent running game that he has, look for him to have a nice year.
Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan will have solid years: With decent rookie seasons last year, Ryan and Flacco have more experience under their belt and that should lead to success for the both of them.
Tony Gonzalez loves his new home: With a 73 yard, 1 TD turnout in Sunday’s win over the Dolphins, Gonzo had an average of 14.6 yards. I think that Tony is going to be the top tight end in the league and is by far the best blocking tight end in the league and should provide the Falcons with some much welcomed veteran leadership.
Brady still has it: Coming off a major knee surgery last year following the hit that knocked him out for the year, Brady looked okay through the first 3 quarters, then led the Pats to 14 points in 76 seconds that gave them the 25-24 win over the Bills. Look for Brady to pick up where he left off the year before. (Less some TDs and yardage of course)
Adrian Peterson=2,000: The top running back in the league may very well eclipse the 2,000 yard mark this year if he continues to dominate as he did on Sunday, and has to be the front runner for the MVP race. (Brees is next)
