Manning, Brees, and the Broncos Roll in ‘09

by Cody Clark ~ October 25th, 2009.

Three of the NFL’s 32 teams have been living large this year, as they are a combined 18-0 through their first 18 games. For the Indianapolis Colts, the plan has been really very simple; put the game in Peyton Manning’s hands. And so far this year, that is what the have done as Manning came into the Rams game with pretty gaudy statistics. Through 5 games, Manning has a rating of 114.5 and 12 TDs behind 1,645 yards through the air against only four picks. Indy is ranked 11th in total offensive yards, and is fourth in passing yards per game. Even though they have not played great competition so far this year, the Colts are a great team and I think that at least a 12-4 record is very feasible. For the 6-0 New Orleans Saints, they have had a similar motto; ride QB Drew Brees. Coming into their game against Miami today, Brees had 13 TDs behind 1,400 yards and an NFL leading 118.4 passer rating. After taking it to the then undefeated Giants, the Saints realized that they had a great defense, and will use that in combination with Brees to try and wear down opposing defenses. For the Saints, at least 13-3 looks ideal, as the rest of their schedule shapes up to be a smooth ride for the Saints. Then you have the Broncos. Behind the combination of a very effective running game with Moreno and Buckhalter, one of the most efficient QBs in the league (1 INT through 6 games), and the # 9 ranked defense led by 10 sack man Elvis Dumervil, the Broncos have cruised this year. With great play from the defense as well as the offense, the Broncos have defeated solid teams such as New England and the Chargers and look to continue next week versus the Ravens. A 11-5 record at worst is what I think will happen with the Broncos, as they have to play the Ravens, Colts, Chargers, and Steelers on their remaining schedule.
