Johnson’s 25 Gets Syracuse Past Tar Heels 87-71

by Cody Clark ~ November 20th, 2009.

On the back of  junior Wesley Johnson’s 27 point, 8 rebound performance, the Syracuse Orangemen used a 22-1 run to begin the second half that allowed them to pull away from the Tar Heels in the 2K Sports Classic. UNC took the lead on a tip in with 12 seconds left to go in the 1st half and took that 2 point 39-37 lead into the half, but that is when the Orange kicked it in. Brandon Triche and Arinze Onuaku hit two point field goals in the opening forty seconds of the second half, and by the time the run was halted 8 minutes later, Cuse found themselves with a commending 59-40 with 12 minutes to play. The Tar heels would climb back within eight points, but could never get enough of a surge in order to top the undefeated Orangemen. Onuaku added 15 points and Andy Rautins clogged the stat sheet with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 7 steals. Syracuse now plays host to four straight home games and do not face a tough opponent until January 2nd when they get Pitt at home. The Orangemen have started their year off with a bang, and deserve to crack the top 15 with this impressive win.
