John Smoltz=Awful
by Cody Clark ~ August 7th, 2009.Former Cy Young award winner John Smoltz signed with the Red Sox very early in the season. I do not think that the Sox planned on him starting too many games. Boston thought that they would only need Smoltz to make spot starts and to give starters a rest because they had a good rotation in the beginning of the year with Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Brad Penny, Tim Wakefield and Daisuke Matsuzaka. Since Wakefield and Matsuzaka’s exits to the DL, Smoltz and Clay Bucholz have had to step in and fill the void. (Although they are no Tim Wakefield or Matsuzaka) Personally, I do not know what the Red Sox when they decided to sign Smoltz because they are better spot starters out there. In his 8 starts as a Red Sox, John has a 2-5 record with a 8.33 ERA and batters batting .349 against him. In other words, John Smoltz has been nothing short of AWFUL! It was a bad move picking up a 42 year old pitcher and I wonder how long the Sox are going to stick with him because he can not get ANYONE out. (Especially lefties)
