Gallon Brings Down the Rim; Literally!
by Cody Clark ~ January 1st, 2010.In one of the most rare occurrences in college basketball, Oklahoma Sooners’ forward Keith “Tiny” Gallon brought down the rim both literally and figuratively with 15 minutes left in the second half of their contest with the #22 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Sooners picked for point guard Willie Warren at the top of the key, and Warren took it to the left. The was drawn up to be either a Warren pull-up jumper or a play at the rim off the roll, but I’m sure that head coach Jeff Capel never would have thought that it would result in the bringing down of the rim and the shattering of the backboard. As the pass from Warren reached Gallon, a defender tipped it away and Keith did what every player does on a dunk; follows through with it whether it is a miss or a make. And as Tiny Gallon came down to the floor, so did the glass as it shattered into millions of pieces and settled, covering the area underneath the basket. Luckily, no one was injured by the flying glass and play was able to resume over an hour later in Spokane Arena. Oklahoma lost the ball game by 14, but last night marked a moment that Gallon can tell his kids about in the future. (Check out the replay; there is nothing “Tiny” about this rim rattler. http://espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=293652250 )
