Devan Downey made the right move last year when he declared that he was coming back to school to play his senior season with the Gamecocks. Last night in the teams opener against Alabama A&M, the 5-9, 175 pound point guard had 23 points and shot 78% from the field including 80% behind the arc and went 5 for 6 at the charity stripe. Carolina returns four key starting players from last year’s 22-10 team that reached the NIT Tournament; Downey, 6-7 forward Dominci Archie, 6-9 forward Sam Muldrow and 6-7 forward Mike Holmes. I suspect that Carolina can at least repeat a season like last year, but if Downey can stay hot and lead this team, I think that they have a shot at the Big Dance come March.
