Crimson Tide Roll Despite Slow Start

by Cody Clark ~ January 8th, 2010.

After the Alabama Crimson Tide only totaled 6 yards including a punt and an interception on 9 plays on their first two drives, Mark Ingram finally got the Tide on the board with a two yard touchdown run on their third drive of the game as they took a 7-6 lead. From that point on, Alabama never looked back as they rolled to 17 more points in the second quarter. They held a commanding 24-6 lead at the half after Texas’ senior quarterback Colt McCoy exited the game within the first five plays of the game with a shoulder injury on a hit from lineman Marcell Dareus. Backup quarterback Garret Gilbert suddenly found life, however, as the only score of the third quarter came on a 44 yard pass from Gilbert to Jordan Shipley. Texas chipped back within three points with just over 6 minutes to go in the final stanza, as Shipley caught a 28 yard touchdown pass to make the score 24-21 ‘Bama. That is as close as Texas wold get, as the Crimson Tide scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to give them a 37-21 win in the BCS National Championship. This capped an undefeated season for the Tide, and gave them their first title since the 1992 season and give Saban his second title as a head coach. Senior Colt McCoy, who had never missed a game as a four year starter for the Longhorns, was at a loss for words in the post game interview as he tried to explain what it was like being on the sideline, watching your team play without you. McCoy and Ingram should no doubt be prospects in this year’s draft, and should pan out to be decent selection in the upcoming 2010 draft.
