College Football is Back!
by Cody Clark ~ September 8th, 2009.This past week marked the beginning of the college football season, and we have already seen many great games in just a few days. Now, granted, there are the teams that usual always schedule a creme puff team to open the season, (Florida vs Charleston Southern; Come on!) and you have to give credit to the teams that actually play someone the first week. (Like FSU, BYU, and Alabama) These teams that schedule “real” games at the beginning of the season might look foolish, (because everyone else scheduled easy games) but I think that they have better teams for it. Below are some news and notes and my thoughts on some of the weekends intriguing match-ups.
1. Oklahoma vs. BYU- a preseason favorite at number three atop the polls, Oklahoma had a major let down as they lost to BYU, and they have also lost their star quarterback Sam Bradford and are without big tight end Jermaine Gresham
2. Florida State vs. Miami- in a game that sported 990 total yards of offense, the Seminoles and Hurricanes both looked like formidable opponents. (Finally!) Look for both these teams to have good seasons and keep an eye on QBs Ponder and Harris this season.
3. Alabama vs. Virginia Tech- Bama narrowly escaped Va. Tech in the fourth quarter of a 34-24 win. I have a few doubts about Virgina Tech, but I think that they will be fine in a wide open ACC race.
4. Boise State vs. Oregon- the Broncos dominated the Ducks in their opening game, with the D only allowing 154 total yards of offense. Look for Boise State to definitely be another great team and possibly earn a BCS berth as they try to fend off BYU, TCU, and others.
5. Minnesota vs. Syracuse- Welcome Greg Paulus! In his first start at QB since his senior year in high school, the former Duke point guard had a decent game, going 19/31 for 167 yards with a TD and a pick. Paulus managed the game nicely and gave an irrelevant Syracuse team a chance to win. Look for Paulus to be a pleasant surprise in 2009-10.
