BCS Busted Saturday

by Cody Clark ~ September 20th, 2009.

Yesterday in college football showed us why we tune in every Saturday. We love to see the great teams dominate the field of play, but we also like to see the top teams go down, as this gives the smaller market teams greater attention. There were a number of upsets this week, as top teams were taken down by un-ranked or lower ranked teams. The Florida State Seminoles took down the number 7 team BYU. Washington defeated the number three team USC with a last second 22 yard field goal, the the Miami Hurricanes took down 14th ranked Georgia Tech, and Oregon beating Utah to take down the winning-est streak in college football. All these upsets toss a monkey wrench into the BCS standings, and all we can do is wait and see how things turn out. (And hope for more upsets!) Below are five observations I had from the weekend’s games.

  1. Florida is not as good as last year: With some of their receivers gone to the NFL, the Florida offense is not as potent as it was a year ago. They are going to be fine, but as Tennessee showed, if you play good defense, you may be able to take them down.
  2. Jahvid Bess is the best running back in college football: With his 131 yards on 26 carries and five TDs, Bess has showed us that he could possibly win the Heisman if he keeps this up, and is a little Adrian Peterson-esque. He ranks third in rushing and first in TDs, and if he keeps things up, Cal can definitely be a shaker in the Pac-10.
  3. FSU and Miami are forces to be reckoned with: With each team’s respectable wins over good teams, (BYU and Ga. Tech) each has showed that they are ready to get back into the college football spotlight, and if each keeps things up, they will see each other again in the ACC championship game.
  4. Landry Jones is a fine replacement for Sam Bradford: With his 6 TD performance over Tulsa, Oklahoma now improves to 2-0 with Jones as the starter. Granted they have played Tulsa and Idaho State, but they have enough play makers that they will be okay as Bradford gets ready to come back from his injury.
  5. Taylor Potts for the Heisman?: Based solely on numbers, Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts would be blowing everyone away with 1281 yards, 12 touchdowns, and is completing 69.5% of his passes. Potts is slightly ahead of where Graham Harrell was last year, and if Texas Tech can win most of their games and get some big wins, I think that Potts would definitely become a front runner for the coveted Heisman Trophy.

That rss page on your blog here is splendid, you should tell people about it in your upcoming post. I haven’t noted it a first, now I’m using it every morning to check on any updates. I’m on a real slow dial-up connection in Ohio and it’s rather hindering to sit there and wait for such a long time ’til the page loads… but hey, I just found your rss page and added it to the Google Reader and there you are… I’m always up-to-date! Well buddy, keep up the good work and make that rss button a little bigger so that other people can enjoy that as well :-P

I can say that, since reading this article it saved me from the useless searches I did on this matter.
