A Tale of Two Teams

by Cody Clark ~ October 11th, 2009.

Florida and Florida State have been two totally different teams this year. The #1 ranked Florida Gators have cruised this season, with the exception of last night’s LSU game, while the Seminoles can’t seem to decide whether they want to win or lose this season. FSU started okay, losing by 4 points to a very solid Miami team. Then the next game, they went out and stole away the game from FCS team Jacksonville State with 12 points in the final stanza. They then went out and dominated then #11 BYU 54-28 behind 23 point second quarter, and the next week came home and laid an egg against S0uth Florida in a 17-7 loss after receiving a #18 ranking in the polls. The Seminoles now sit at 2-4 after defeats from a bad BC team and last night’s game vs. Ga. Tech in which they led 35-28 at the half and put up a total of 539 yard of offense. For the Gators, this year has been a much different story. They opened the season with Charleston Southern and Troy, showing that they could beat up on terrible teams outscoring them 118-9. The Gators next hosted Tennessee, who gave them more of a challenge than most thought with a narrow 23-13 win. Kentucky was up next for the Gators, and after a tough first quarter, the Gators pulled away and won easily 41-7. (It was also the game that they lost Heisman trophy winning QB Tim Tebow on a vicious hit) Then last night they traveled to LSU, where the Tigers had won 32 straight Saturday night games at home. The Gators would have none of that, however, as Florida prevailed in a low scoring 13-3 contest in Tebow’s return behind 193 yards rushing mostly coming from Tebow (38), Demps (86), and Moody (42). The Gators have shown so far this year that they have the defense (which has only allowed 2 TDs and ranks #1 in the nation) and have enough offensive and defensive presence that they can beat you in a 10-3 game, or a 35-30 game. The Gators and Seminoles have been polar opposites this year, and I think that that continues the rest of the season, as FSU still has to play Florida, North Carolina, and hard to figure teams like Maryland and Wake, while the Gators only real test the rest of the season might be the Georgia game and the SEC Championship game. (Possibly Carolina, but I’m not really seeing it happen)
