2009 NBA Free Agency
by Cody Clark ~ July 16th, 2009.This years free agency class was a pretty good one, but I do not think that it will be anything on the big names that become free agents in the 2010 class like LeBron and Kobe. There were many big moves such as Ben Gordon to the Pistons, Rasheed Wallace to the Celtics, and Ron Artest to the Lakers. There were also many other moves that you could call “midlevel” such as Dahntay Jones to the Pacers, Shawn Marion to the Mavericks, and Antonio McDyess to the Spurs. Below are my picks for the winners and losers in free agency this summer.
Winners:
San Antonio Spurs- The organization did a great job in trades and free agency this summer. The Spurs picked up some big names that will help their team, which include trading for Richard Jefferson and picking up another big body in Antonio McDyess from the Pistons. Look for the Spurs to be major challengers in the West next year. Dallas Mavericks- The Mavs made some big moves this offseason also by picking up Shawn Marion form the Raptors, resigning Jason Kidd , and picking up Quintin Ross from the Grizzlies. Look for the Mavs to make a much bigger impact and to further deepen the Western Conference.
Losers:
Boston Celtics- I know this is tough to say, but the Celtics did not make any big moves other than Rasheed Wallace. With the Orlando Magic matching the Mavs offer for Gortat and signing Bass from the Mavs, and the Lakers and Spurs each improving their teams. I think that Boston could have made another move to help their chance for a title run.
